Andhra Pradesh Judge implicated in dowry harassment case

June 21, 2009

A father and son, both judges, found themselves on the other side of the law on Friday. The entire family, including the elder judge’s wife, has been arrested in a dowry harassment case.
While the father, T Narasimha Rao, is additional district judge and special judge for SC & ST (prevention of atrocities Act) cases in Mahbubnagar, the son, T Kiran Kumar, is a junior civil judge at Raidurgam in Anantapur district.
The Central Crime Station (CCS) acted on a complaint lodged by the daughter-in-law, Shashikala (28), accusing her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law Narayanamma of harassing her for dowry since her marriage on Feb. 17, 2005. The couple has a 3-yearold son.
Shashikala, who is from Madhuranagar in Secunderabad, had alleged in her complaint lodged on August 8, 2008, that despite a dowry of Rs 5.5 lakh and gold over 150 gm, her husband’s family kept demanding more and wanted a house in Madhuranagar to be transferred in their name. She also accused them of bribing cops to arrest and torture her brother. The CCS is also investigating charges of dowry harassment against three more persons — V Jyotsana Devi, B Bharati and B Ellappa.
After a prima facie case was found against the accused, cops registered a case under section 498-A (subjecting a married woman to cruelty), and sought permission from registrar of high court to proceed. The three were arrested after getting the clearance.

Lalgarh Police Station Captured by Security Forces | 21st June 2009

June 21, 2009

Lalgarh/New Delhi (WB) Jun 20 (PTI) Security forces today moved into Lalgarh and took control of the police station here to snuff out the six-day old siege by Maoists who ambushed a convoy en route to the area in West Midnapore district injuring six policemen.
A landmine, hidden underneath a culvert, exploded as a convoy ferrying security forces passed over it on the West Midnapore-Bankura district border injuring four policemen, Superintendent of Police, Burdwan, Humayun Kabir, who was leading the men told PTI.
A group of around 60 Maoists then fired at the convoy injuring another two, he said.
Four Maoist were killed in the encounter, while four policemen were injured in the landmine blast and two others in firing by the Maoists.
In Delhi, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said the West Bengal government was considering banning the CPI(Maoists) following a suggestion by Home Minister P Chidambaram.
The first group of security men arrived at Lalgarh police station, which had been cut off by the tribals since November last year, with the police saying that it was a ‘partial victory’.

Bandit Ghanshyam Kevat gunned down after 52 hrs of fierce encounter in Chitrakoot,UP

June 19, 2009

A dacoit with traditional 303 gun, battled with around 500 heavily armed elite Uttar Pradesh cops and commandos for more than 50 hours. The UP police lost four  of their own people, including a PAC commanding officer in bid to  kill the dreaded dacoit, Ghanshyam Kevat, in a Chitrakoot village on Thursday afternoon. After holding on to his fortified position in a two-storey pucca house for three days, Kevat was finally shot as he tried to escape towards a nearby forest, after killing a constable, his fourth victim. Alarmingly, STF chief Brij Lal was leading the team into the house and he could have as easily been the dacoit’s next target.

However, in Lucknow, DGP Vikram Singh crowed about the operation, saying despite 1,500 rounds being fired and several grenades lobbed, ‘‘no civilian casualty or injury was reported’’.

The joint team of special task force (STF), special operations group (SOG) and PAC battalions surrounded the village of Jamauli to nail the 40-plus brigand who has nine cases of cases of murder, extortion and dacoity against him.

The operation was the lengthiest in the history of UP police. Apart from surprise attacks by Naxals or the recent ambush by slain brigand Thokia and his gang in which nine STF men were killed, the Jamauli encounter is perhaps the only incident in which four cops were killed while 11 others including an IG and DIG were injured battling a single bandit.

All that Kevat had was .315 bore rifle and some bullets. With more sophisticated weapons and ammunition, it’s anybody’s guess how much longer he could have held out against UP’s crack units.

Kevat, surrounded from all sides, killed constable Veer Singh on Thursday as he, as part of Brij Lal’s team, tried to enter the house. After shooting down the constable, Kevat got out, went to the terrace and — with bullets flying all around him — jumped on to another roof, and ran out towards the field that lay between him and the forest. While police kept firing and missing, Kevat ran almost half a kilometre before being knocked down by police bullets. ‘‘We chased him and shot him dead in a rivulet as he tried to run towards a nearby jungle,’’ Chitrakoot ASP Jugal Kishore told TOI over phone from the spot.

Brij Lal led the final offensive after a pep-talk to his men. He asked them to move and avenge the death of their colleagues. ‘‘This did the trick. The next offensive proved to be the last for the dacoit,’’ Brij Lal told TOI over phone from Chitrakoot.

Central forces struggling against Maoists in Lalgarh

June 19, 2009

Pirakata (WB), June 18

Security forces today cracked down on Maoists to end the four-day siege of Lalgarh facing little resistance as they moved in to reclaim areas taken over by the armed tribals.

A 600-strong mob of tribals armed with batons, axes, spears, bows and arrows blocked the road when the forces arrived and shouted at the police to “apologise” for “atrocities” committed.

A police officer warned Maoists, who formed a human shield, to disperse within two minutes. Armed police, CRPF and riot police then fired teargas shells and baton charged as the mob cleared the road within 10 minutes.

Police said it was one of nearly 100 blockades that the securitymen would have to face en route to the Lalgarh police station area.

The tribals belonging to the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities, were stated to be regrouping further down the road.

A tribal injured in the police action was arrested and taken to a police camp.

The crackdown was announced by West Bengal Director General of Police Sujit Kumar Sarkar.

Shiney Ahuja, Victim or Criminal , Media must look for other ends

June 15, 2009

The breaking News is that the 36-year-old actor, Shiney Ahuja has been booked under Section 376 (rape), Section 346 (wrongful restraint) and Section 506 (threat to kill) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). If the charges are proved, they attract a minimum jail term of seven years.

Both Ahuja and the victim have undergone medical tests in government hospital. Preliminary medical reports on the victim have proved positive, the official said.

Now coming to the second point there are lot of different version of news going on in the media, in a telecast at around 5.00 pm on Aaj Tak it was claimed that the girl was working with Shiney Ahuja’s family for only one and half month and she was not living with them and visited the house to give her services. The girl claimed (we don’t know what she claimed but what we read on the website of The Hindu is that she was repeatedly raped and threatened by her master,  Ahuja. Now the question is that if she was repeatedly raped then why the hell she was continuing to work with the actor’s family.
Second question that comes out naturally in the mind is that does Shiney has got any such record of forcing himself on any other lady, when we go through the records there are none. Anyway, passing out judgement on a case which is subjudice will not help but it is very hard digest the fact that an intense personality like Shiney might have really forced himself on a servant girl. It would be better if some investigation is done and the real story is revealed as the way things are happening and going through twists and turns, it seems that Shiney Ahuja is the new kick bag of media and probably we will hear lot of stories that what a great monster he is. Its amazing if he is a monster why he surrendered to the law of the land, he could have easily escaped the law by going underground, but he never did that so it means he is ready to abide with the law which real culprits never do. It would be better if the media concentrate on other angles of the case rather than coming out with the sleazy details which are not going to help anyone.

Surat, Vishva Hindu Parishad Calls a Bandh after the sensational Rape Case

June 15, 2009

Now it seems that the rape case in Surat will blow out of proportion. Yesterday it was the sound and probably deserving thrashing of the rapists which  reflected the incapability of  law machinery of the state in handling the case.  Now the same machinery will undergo litmus test as today on 15 th June 2009 the Vishva Hindu Parishad has called the Bandh.  One should not forget that the victim belongs to the majority Hindu community whereas , the perpetrtors belong to the minority muslim community. Involvement of organizations like VHP and Bajrang Dal can add communal colours to the whole incident.

In the gory riots of 2002, Surat was rare exception and there were not any major incident of violence in this city. However,  riots broke out in the early 1990’s just after the demolition of the Babri Mosque.

Pradhan Committe Report has only one person to blame, Hasan Gafoor

June 15, 2009

The two-member Pradhan committee headed by veteran bureaucrat Ram Pradhan blamed  then Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor for his complete failure to provide leadership during the hours of crisis.
Gafoor was replaced on Saturday by D Sivanandan, chief of state intelligence department.
The committee said that Gafoor completely failed to implement the standard operation procedures laid down in the Bombay Police Manual. Through much of the attack, Gafoor stationed himself at one spot near the Oberoi and asked crime branch chief Rakesh Maria to take charge of the control room. Gafoor did not show leadership qualities, the panel said. Above all, Gafoor’s attitude created an impression among subordinates that they were not part of the high-level police team tackling terror.
The panel, which comprised former Union secretary Pradhan and retired IPS officer V Balachandran, also found fault with the circumstances the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) had to function in and the Taj and Oberoi hotels not taking enough note of prior warnings. Meanwhile, intelligence reports were processed at the state level mechanically, the panel said.
In a report of some 100-odd pages submitted to the Maharashtra government on May 27, the Pradhan panel dealt on inputs from central intelligence, stocks of arms and ammunition, and the performance of officers from the rank of director-general of police (DGP) down to deputy commissioner of police (DCP).
Surprisingly, while the committee lambasted Gafoor, it gave a clean chit to then Maharashtra DGP AN Roy. The panel also showered praise on Maria for taking charge and DCP (Zone 1) Vishwas Nagre-Patil and DCP (Special Branch) Rajvardhan Sinha for showing exemplary courage during the Taj attack.
However, the committee came out in support of Roy, saying that as per the provisions of the police manual, Roy did his job well and coordinated with senior state and Mumbai police officials even though he was not directly responsible for tackling the law-and-order situation in Mumbai.

Paresh Barua , ULFA Leader, Arrested in Bangladesh, hoax or truth

June 15, 2009

ULFA leader Paresh Barua arrested in B’desh? Anisur Rahman Dhaka, Jun 14 (PTI) Top ULFA leader Paresh Barua, on the run for three decades, has been arrested here, a Bangladeshi newspaper reported today, but the police dismissed it as a “hoax”.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials arrested a suspected Indian national at a house in central Dhaka’s posh residential locality Dhanmondi late last night, said widely-circulated Bengali dailies ‘Ittefaq’ and ‘Samakal’.

The police is ascertaining whether the arrested man, from whom a passport was recovered with the name Shamsul Alam on it, has any link with the separatist Indian group ULFA, the newspapers said.

Quoting an unnamed intelligence official, Samakal said the arrested man was Paresh Barua, the prime accused in the seizure of huge arms and ammunitions along the Chittagong coast in 2004. Police, however, did not confirm, it added.

However, a senior CID official dismissed the reports of Barua’s arrest.

“Following the reports in the two newspapers about the arrest of Paresh Barua, we checked the matter and found it to be hoax… No such person was arrested by our men as reported,” the official told PTI. PTI
